Gas Works Park

I'm on a mission to visit as many Seattle parks as I can. And today I found my current favorite one. The Gas Works Park has (many) superb views, a sweet little grassy hill to flop about on, and the Burke-Gilman trail passes right though it.

The Gum Wall

When we first came upon this "local landmark' a couple months ago, there were like 100 photographers there -- must have been a workshop or a tourist group. I went back this week to get a photo.

From Wikipedia:

The wall is by the box office for the Market Theater, and the tradition began around 1993 when patrons of Unexpected Productions' Seattle Theatresports stuck gum to the wall and placed coins in the gum blobs. Theater workers scraped the gum away twice, but eventually gave up after market officials deemed the gum wall a tourist attraction in around 1999. People initially stuck coins to the wall using the gum, and some people create small works of art out of gum.

It was named one of the top 5 germiest tourist attractions in 2009, second to the Blarney Stone. It is the location of the start of a ghost tour, and it is a popular site with wedding photographers.

Like anyone else, I'd imagine, I've been in awe of Mount Rainier ever since I laid eyes on it's lofty peak. Most of the days so far though, I haven't seen it, so it certainly is a sight to behold every time "Rainier's out" as the locals say. Today was a magnificent day, sunny, clear and warm. And I made my first exposure of the gorgeous volcano. The picture hardly does it justice, and hopefully I can make another one soon with a zoom lens :) (Cropped image.)

The Fremont Farmer's Market

I'm impressed by how many Farmer's markets are organized in Seattle, and most of them run the whole year through! This Sunday, we had a nice lunch at a spanish tapas place called Ocho, which was right around the corner from the Fremont Farmer's Markets, so we hopped in for a quick peek. IT was kinda drizzly, so I wasn't really taking photos up until we ate some delicious little mini donuts from this cute little truck. (Yum.) They were pretty darn cheap too.

The Women in Black

Happened to pass them this Thursday, and took a leaflet.

From the leaflet -

Seattle Women in Black is part of an international network of women standing in silent vigil, calling for peace, justice and non-violent solutions to conflict. Started in 1988 by Israeli / Palestinian women, it has spread to conflict areas all over the world. Each group is autonomous, but related to the other in the way women stand in silent vigil dressed in black.

All women are welcome to stand silently with us any Thursday, 5-6pm at Westlake Park wearing black/dark clothes. Men in support are welcome to leaflet or to stand beside the women's vigil.

I made this photo at the Museum of Flight, in the Boeing Field where I attended a photo workshop yesterday (unfortunately, it was a major waste of time). The statue is of Astronaut Michael P Anderson who died in the Columbia Space Shuttle when it disintegrated during reentry into earth's atmosphere.

I also want to mention the historic news from last night -- the death of Osama Bin Laden. I hope it brings unity and humanity in our world and that the days of terror are behind us.

The easiest way to see if an Indian restaurant is genuine, authentic and super delicious -- look for spelling mistakes in the menu! This place certainly is, and the butter chicken is delicious, the naan is enormous, and they've always served us free dessert.

I've been reading a lot of my photography books and the most recent 'learning' that I've implemented is shooting with the Mirror-Up. It took me a while to get used to it, but it certainly produces much sharper and less blurrier photos!

Guzheng in the Quad

Two ladies were playing this instrument (called the guzheng) in the UW Quad to collect donations for Japan. It was very delicate, soulful and stirring music, to say the least. Gorgeous.

Red Delicious Apples

I love apples. And the variety of apples you get here in the US! These are called the Red Delicious. Other mouthwatering names are Honeycrisp, Honeygold, Fuji, Gala, and God knows how many more.

Cherry Blossoms at the Meet Up

I went for a "Meet Up" organized nearby called Cherry Blossoms! They are everywhere now, and have been driving me crazy (especially the pink ones) because I have never fully encountered their magic before, and especially after a long, cold, snowy winter, it was exactly the magic I needed. The University of Washington has a quad that was literally lined with only these gorgeous white-cherry blossoms, and my breath really caught when I stepped in.

We bought our first lensbaby, the Scout, which comes with a fisheye optic. Just still getting the hang of using it since it needs manual focus, but it's great to have such a super-wide view of the world. This is a photo of one of the tanks in the Seattle Aquarium.
